Tag: Mosque

I visit a lot of grand, old churches in my travels, particularly in Europe. That’s natural because Europe is lousy with magnificent, venerable churches. But this “mosque” tag is rather sparse. A the time I wrote this description I had attached it to only one post. Maybe there will be more when you read stumble on this tag description. Maybe not.

There are at least a few reasons for this. Most of my travels are in western countries. Churches built over the ages are more common in those countries than old mosques. Some of those countries went through periods of Islamic dominance. But that usually ended hundreds of years ago. The grand, old mosques  from those periods were often either destroyed or converted to churches.

Another reason, and I recognize this might be a false stereotype that I believe simply because I’m not familiar with common Islamic practice, is that I think many of of the impressive mosques that are still in use as mosques don’t welcome visitors from outside the faith. Most of the grand, old churches do.
