Hobart Travel Journal

Hobart is a city in the Australian state of Tasmania. In fact, it’s the capital of Tasmania.

I’m embarrassed to admit that before considering a trip to Australia, I don’t think I’d heard of Hobart. That probably says a lot more about my ignorance than Hobart’s position in the world. I put it on my itinerary because I saw a recommendation to do so in a tour book about Australia.

I’m also embarrassed to admit that when I hear “Tasmania” I can’t help thinking of the Tasmanian Devil, also known as Taz, in the old Looney Toons cartoons of my youth. I wrote this description before going to Australia. I don’t imagine I’ll see Taz there, what with it being a cartoon character and all. (Yes, I’m old. If you aren’t then Taz might not mean anything to you.)

But my understanding is that Tasmanian devils are a real species. I don’t know enough about them to know if I should be eager or anxious to see them in person. Then again, I’m anxious about everything. So I’ll probably go that route.

This is a sub-subcategory of “Australia,” which is a subcategory of “Australasia.”
