I love sunsets. If someone steals my iPhone and is able to unlock it they’ll find a lot of sunset shots there. A lot of other scenes too, but, in my photos, sunsets are out of proportion to their time and place in the world.
Understand, I’m not talking about just any sunset. It has to be above normal aesthetically, based on my tastes, to qualify. To my mind, the best sunsets are usually over large bodies of water—an ocean, sea, or large lake. Although, I’ve also seen a few gorgeous sunsets over landscapes too. It’s just that it’s rarer.
Clouds are also important. A few fortunately placed, tastefully shaped, well-proportioned clouds in the sky can pick up the colour from the setting sun spectacularly. Of course, too many clouds spoil it. For example, if clouds completely obscure the entire sky there is nothing worth seeing unless you enjoy being gloomy. (Hey, stop that! Yes, I’m gloomy. That doesn’t mean I enjoy it.)
