I like to think of myself as at least somewhat woke. Rightwing nut job statements notwithstanding, woke is good. Very good.

I realize that being woke means I shouldn’t like zoos, but I do. If a city or town I visit has a somewhat renowned zoo in it, I’ll probably visit it. Sorry. I know that brings down my woke score a little.

But, on the other hand, I do believe that people should be accepted for who they are and who they love, reasonable gun control is good, and that governments have a role to play in taking good care of its citizens. So I think I do have some claim to at least a modicum of wokeness.

Wait. Where was I? Oh yeah, zoos. I won’t see many of the zoo’s animals in their natural habitat. A respectable zoo gives me the opportunity to see them in an enclosure that usually tries to replicate that natural habitat, albeit in only a fraction of its size. And good zoos help to protect species that are endangered in the wild.

If I visit a zoo, I try to remember to flag my travel journal entry that talks about the visit with the tag “zoo.” I don’t always succeed. They say, probably incorrectly, that an elephant never forgets. But, even if that statement is accurate, I am not an elephant. I often forget.
