A market can be one of the most vibrant places in a city or town. Understand, I’m not talking about a Walmart or Costco here. Although, if you like those sorts of places, have at it. I probably won’t join you, though. I’m not going to say there isn’t enough money in the world to get me to go to one. Clearly, there is. How much would it take? I don’t know. Try me. But, I’ll expect a written, binding contract. And I’ll hold you to it.

So, if I’m not talking about homogenous commercial behemoths, what am I talking about? I refer here to a venue housing a collection of small vendors, primarily selling fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, condiments and dairy products, and sometimes tchotchkes. There might also be some prepared foods to eat there or take away.

Such a market can be clean or gritty, but it’s almost always lively. When I visit an interesting municipal market I try to remember to flag it with a “market” tag. Truth is, I try to do a lot of things. I don’t always succeed. Sorry about that.
